Vacancy WRDTP Deputy Director (Training and Development)

Date

The ESRC-funded White Rose Doctoral Training Partnership (WRDTP) is seeking to appoint a Deputy Director (Training and Development), who will be responsible for ensuring that the WRDTP’s training offer is aligned to the training and development needs of students, and for providing strategic leadership in relation to PGR professional development.

This is a new role, which reflects the WRDTP’s commitment to the professional development of PGRs, and to ensuring distributed leadership across our seven partner universities.  The post offers an exciting opportunity to shape the WRTDP’s offer to ensure that students acquire the skills needed to flourish in a range of academic and non-academic careers; and to work across partner institutions to promote best practice and wider cultural change.

As detailed in the attached job description, the role of will be taken up by an academic colleague with:

  • experience of the organisation and delivery of high-quality PGR training and development.
  • relevant experience of successful academic leadership.
  • relevant experience of successful cross-organisational working, operating across departments, faculties or institutions to realise common objectives.
  • experience of working with external stakeholders.
  • in-depth understanding of the PGR professional development agenda.
  • understanding of the wider research funding and sectoral landscape.

The role will normally be held by someone located in any departments and schools that have been formally accredited by the WRDTP, and/or has relevant social science leadership experience that cuts across accredited departments and schools.  The role holder work with the WRDTP Director, WRDTP Manager and WRDTP Deputy Director (EDI) as part of the WRDTP senior leadership team.

The role of Deputy Director (Training and Development) has an indicative workload of 0.3 FTE attached to it.  This is to provide the role-holder and line managers with a realistic sense of the time that is required to undertake the role.  The term is for three years, and it is anticipated that the successful applicant will take up the position on or around 1 February 2024.

Please note that the role is not remunerated, and does not come with ‘buy-out’ funding.  All seven partner institutions, via the WRDTP Management Group, have committed to ensuring the in-kind resources necessary (i.e. colleagues’ time) to enable colleagues to participate in the governance of the WRDTP.

Full details about the role are in the attached role descriptor.  To apply for this position, please submit the following three documents:

1. A short CV (no more than two pages)
2. An expression of interest detailing your views about the priorities of the role and your relevant experience.
3. A statement of support from your Head of Department or School, which also confirms that an indicative workload of 0.3 FTE has been agreed.

Applications should be sent to the WRDTP (enquiries@wrdtp.ac.uk), no later than midday on Thursday 16 November.  Interviews will be held online on Tuesday 28 November.

If you have any questions about the role, please contact Professor Felicity Matthews, WRDTP Director (f.m.matthews@sheffield.ac.uk).
