The project ‘Northern Exposure: Race, Nation and Disaffection in "Ordinary" Towns and Cities after Brexit’, is a major social science project which examined the implications of Brexit on race relations, new migrations and Northerners’ sense of place and belonging.  Funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), the three-year project concluded in May 2022 and saw the research team investigate how Brexit impacted local communities in the North, amidst growing inequalities, racial tensions and post-industrial decline.

From Where We Stand is a thoughtfully observed film that feels truly collaborative, and an authentic portrait of Northern England post-Brexit.

from the LIFF film programme

In her insightful and compassionate documentary from the project, film-maker Lucy Kaye creates intimate portraits of diverse individuals in three Northern English towns. Filmed across Wakefield, Halifax and Middlesbrough, the film brings together stories of loss, migration, friendship and mutual aid, to convey a strong sense of place and lived experience. Exploring our relationship to the places we live and our sense of belonging, the film challenges stereotypes and gives a vital voice to those not often heard.
