Wednesday 11 October 2023, 11:00 - 12:00

We are delighted to invite you this seminar in collaboration with UCAD. We welcome Professor Peter Matthews and Dr Lee Gregory who will share their research on this hugely important topic, which we hope will be of interest to colleagues across the department.

Title: Access to social security benefits and experiences of the welfare system among LGBT+ people

Abstract: Lesbians, gays, bisexuals and trans (LGBT+) people have historically been an under-studied group in social science. This seminar will present evidence from the first research project looking at the experience of LGBT+ people accessing social security in Great Britain. It will report analysis of the UK Household Longitudinal Study, and possibly the Family Resources Survey, to understand GB-wide patterns of social security benefits among LGB and non-LGB people. We will also present qualitative data from LGBT+ people who have accessed social security benefits via DWP, Social Security Scotland and local councils to understand the specific barriers this group face. The seminar will try and begin a conversation on how services can become more inclusive in practical ways.
