Leaf Lanterns - Leeds Light Night
- Date
- Thursday 24 October 2024, 18:00 - 22:00
Part of the ESRC Festival of Social Science
As part of Leeds Light Night, a campus garden will be lit with decorative lanterns made from preserved summer leaves. People of all ages are invited to enjoy the display and to discover the beauty of trees, as well as the important roles they play in our lives. For younger visitors, our storyteller Liv will be spinning tales of trees and nature in sessions starting at 18:00 and 19:15.
Scientists from the School of Earth and Environment will also host some more hands-on science in the University’s Parkinson Building. Visitors can use light boxes to explore the internal structures of leaves, find out what makes the different colours in nature, and ask the experts their questions about trees in Leeds.
What's it about?
Our Leaf Lanterns event reveals the beauty and importance of trees in urban spaces. By creating lanterns from the preserved summer leaves of trees, we showcase the changes of the seasons and the roles that these trees play. Urban trees capture carbon, reduce flood risks, improve human mental and respiratory health, and offer a host of other benefits to our city wildlife. Visitors to the hands-on science event in Parkinson Court will have the opportunity to discuss these benefits with scientists from the School of Earth and Environment, as well as being shown up close the structures that make each leaf and tree species unique.
Attendees can expect a visually stunning display of evening lights, as part of the wider Leeds Light Night event, as well as more interactive indoor elements which will use light boxes to look inside of leaves, and fluorescence to see exactly how photosynthesis works! Activities will be suitable for all ages.
