Link Seminar - January 2024

A seminar series designed to connect academic knowledge with pressing policy agendas

Presented by DWP in collaboration with the Universities of Leeds, Loughborough, Sheffield and York, LINK is a webinar series designed to help build richer connections between the academic, policy and analytical worlds by providing an opportunity to hear from both leading Social Scientists at the University of Leeds and other universities as well as prominent analysts, strategists and policy makers from the Department for Work and Pensions.

In this Link Seminar, Dr. Kate Andersen of the University of York will be presenting their research on the impact of the two-child limit and the benefit cap on parents and families.

Abstract:  Poverty rates among larger families have risen sharply in the UK in recent years, largely due to cuts and reforms to social security. Two reforms have hit larger families particularly hard - the benefit cap and the two-child limit. The Benefit Changes and Larger Families project, a four-year mixed methods study funded by the Nuffield Foundation, is exploring the impact of these changes on families with three or more children. Through sharing the project's findings obtained from analysis of large scale data sets and from interviews with parents affected by the policies, this presentation will look at whether the two-child limit and the benefit cap are meeting their aims, the impacts of the policies on families, and parents' experiences of the policies during the cost of living crisis.
