Rethinking travel behaviour modelling in the era of emerging data sources

Date

To help build a richer connection between the academic and policy worlds, the Leeds Social Sciences Institute and the Department for Transport have jointly developed this webinar series: Linking Leeds with the DfT.

In our webinar on 15th March 2023, guest speaker Professor Charisma Choudhury, Chair in Behaviour Modelling in the Institute for Transport Studies at the University of Leeds discussed her research on how travel behaviour modelling is changing due to the introduction of new data sources.

Recent technological advances have led to the availability of a wide range of new inputs for travel behaviour modelling.  These range from passively generated traces from mobile phones, smartphone apps etc. to physiological sensor data (e.g. skin-conductance, EEG recordings, etc.) which provide insights regarding the traveller's state of mind. The presentation focussed on the promises offered by such emerging data sources and how they can be integrated with mainstream transport models. Case studies  illustrated how anonymous data from mobile phone and smart cards can be used for developing models for predicting travel behaviour, while skin-conductance, heart rate and EEG data can be used to get additional insights about driving and cycling behaviour.  You can watch the presentation below:

The session was facilitated by Jo Bacon and Donatella D’Antoni from the DfT Behavioural Science team.  We welcome your feedback on this webinar, please complete the participant feedback questionnaire here.
