hosted by Leeds Social Sciences Institute and Leeds Trades Union Council

Speaker:

Liam Kennedy (Centre for Labour and Social Studies)

Discussion panel:

Centre for Labour and Social Studies (CLASS) is a think-tank set up by trade unions to research that informs unions and their members on issues of concern to them. This meeting will discuss their recent report on Tackling Inequality: The Role of Trade Unions.

The report reviews the evidence on the recent increase in inequality on the UK; examines its causes, including the decline in trade union membership and power, and its consequences for economic growth, social justice and political power; and suggests what unions can do to combat inequality.

After the presentation of the report by its author, Liam Kennedy, there will be comments from the three panellists, followed by general discussion.

This meeting is jointly sponsored by the Leeds Social Sciences Institute and the Leeds Trade Union Council.

LSSI brings together social scientists from across the University of Leeds. It fosters interdisciplinary and international research collaborations, promotes relations with external partners in the public, private and third sectors and builds capacity through the provision of training and skills development for the next generation of research leaders.

Leeds Trade Union Council brings together local affiliate trade union branches to campaign around issues affecting working people in their workplaces and local communities. It aims to raise public awareness of rights at work and the union role in enforcing those rights; promote organising and recruitment drives to build union membership; and support union and community campaigns for dignity and respect in the workplace and beyond.
