This seminar is part of the 'Linking Leeds' series; developed in collaboration with the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), in order to help foster richer connections between the academic and policy worlds.

The Linking Leeds seminar series provides opportunities to hear from both leading Social Scientists as well as prominent analysts, strategists and policy makers from the Department for Work and Pensions.

The speaker at this event will be:

  • Katie Pybus (Social Researcher, Department for Work and Pensions) on 'Extending the parity of esteem agenda: Mental illness and stigma from a socioeconomic perspective'.

Abstract:

In this talk I will aim to provide an overview of my PhD research which explores how socioeconomic conditions interact with the stigma associated with mental illness. I will discuss the historical and current context of socioeconomic disadvantage for people with mental illnesses and use this to argue that achieving parity of esteem between physical and mental health requires a move beyond ensuring equal access to healthcare funding and towards engaging with broader social policy initiatives.

The presentations will be followed by a question and answer session.

If you have any access requirements or any further questions about the session, please contact LSSI Communications Coordinator, Katie Barclay (K.barclay@leeds.ac.uk).
