This seminar is part of the 'Linking Leeds' seminar series; developed in collaboration with the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), in order to help foster richer connections between the academic and policy worlds.

The Linking Leeds seminar series provides opportunities to hear from both leading Social Scientists at the University of Leeds as well as prominent analysts, strategists and policy makers from the Department for Work and Pensions.

At this event we will hear from Professor Nick EmmelDr Joanne Greenhalgh and Dr Ana Manzano on 'What works for whom in which circumstance and why?—introducing realist approaches to evaluation, synthesis and research’

Abstract

The first objective of the ‘DWP Areas of Research Interest 2019’ adopts the realist question ‘what works for whom, when, where, why, and under what circumstances.’ A special question because it captures a way of thinking about the world that is quite different to very many traditional methods of evaluation. In this hands-on seminar we will start by considering how this question can be answered, what each part means and how the parts of the question relate to each other. Come prepared to think hard about many of the ideas you have been told about cause, theory, context and the generalisability of findings from evaluation research. Having spent a little time thinking about these ideas we will move on to a practical exercise. Using a hypothetical job training scheme we will ask you to work in groups to write theories about the scheme and consider how you will go about testing these. The session will be facilitated by three experienced realist evaluators and researchers.

The seminar will be followed by a question and answer session.

Please feel free to bring your lunch with you to eat during the session. If you have any access requirements or any further questions about the session, please contact LSSI Communications Coordinator, Katie Barclay (K.barclay@leeds.ac.uk).
