The Leeds City Region Local Enterprise Partnership (the LEP) and West Yorkshire Combined Authority (WYCA) have begun developing a local inclusive industrial strategy. It is anticipated that this process will be formalised with the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) in a third wave of local industrial strategy projects. A previous knowledge exchange project brought together participants from the LEP and WYCA with stakeholders in the region of Styria in Austria, which is home to one of Europe’s largest Green Tech Clusters. As a result of this, there is interest within WYCA for implementing programmes that would support the growth of Green Tech in the Leeds City Region, learning from the success of Styria.

This project will place Jonathan Busch in a secondment to WYCA, working with the Industrial Strategy Development Group to develop and trial techniques for identifying the seeds of potential Green Tech Clusters in the Leeds City Region. One work stream of this project will analyse to what extent it is possible to identify such seeds from business and economic data currently available to WYCA. The second will work directly with companies based around Holmfirth and South Kirklees, previously identified as possible anchors for Green Tech innovation.
