Equitable approaches to climate emergency planning, preparedness and response
Creating Opportunities Through Innovation Fellowships (COLIF)
Ali Malik (School of Law, University of Leeds)
This Fellowship will facilitate the development of a climate emergency and community resilience toolkit, ensuring inclusive and equitable strategies for responding to climate disasters. The toolkit will be co-produced with key third sector organisations based in Leeds and other regions of the UK and will be aimed at statutory public sector bodies involved in Local Resilience Forums (LRFs), such as the police and local authorities. Specifically, the toolkit will:
a) Shine a spotlight on the impacts of climate change and extreme weather events on vulnerable, marginalised, and minoritised communities.
b) Inform an inclusive and equitable approach to local emergency planning, preparedness and response strategies.
c) Foster trust and collaboration between the police, emergency responders, and marginalised communities.
d) Provide a means to assess the effectiveness of emergency response efforts to ensure any lessons learned can be incorporated into future emergency planning and preparedness activity.
